About the event
We will talk about the St Saviour's Dock inlet from a geological perspective, visualising what the land might have looked like when the London Clay was deposited, and speculate on the history of the area from the first settlers.
We will follow the Thames Path east along the Thames, during which we will talk about the geology of the layers of strata beneath our feet and the diversion of the River Thames during the last great glaciation, which caused it to flow on its present course through what is now Bermondsey and Rotherhithe.
We will also talk about the Thames Terrace Staircase gravels and the layers of archaeology and history encountered as we wend our way to the Brunels' Shaft in Rotherhithe.
