About the event

To celebrate the centenary the Rotherhithe and Bermondsey Local History Society have collaborated with the teams behind the Salter Centenary and Capital Walks in London to offer a special themed walk led by experienced tour guides Oonagh Gay and Sue McCarthy.

The tour tells the story of Ada and Alfred Salter and how they transformed the slums of Bermondsey in the early 20th century, making it world-famous for its health service and the beautification of the inner-city. It visits sites connected with the Salters, tells their personal stories and shows how their legacy lives on in the tree-lined streets and model garden cottages designed by Ada. The narrative also investigates the social struggles which went on behind the scenes to achieve the Salters’ ideals. It shows how their radical policies on environment, housing and public health remain relevant even today.

This is for Rotherhithe and Bermondsey Local History Society members only
