This year marks the 150th anniversary of the opening of Canada Dock at Rotherhithe, part of the Surrey Commercial Docks. Originally much larger, the dock was truncated in the 1980's to become what is now known as Canada Water. This talk is the second of a four-part mini-series which will reveal and celebrate the history of the body of water whose name now defines a unique and ever-evolving district of inner London.
Join Jeremy Batch as he reveals step-by-step how the Surrey Commercial Docks grew from a single dock and canal to become the largest system of wet docks south of the River Thames. At its peak, this intricate network of waterways covered nearly 460 acres of the Rotherhithe peninsula, with over 176 acres of water, 193 acres of quayside, and numerous timber ponds.
