About the event

This year marks the 150th anniversary of the opening of Canada Dock at Rotherhithe, part of the Surrey Commercial Docks. Originally much larger, the dock was truncated in the 1980's to become what is now known as Canada Water. This talk is the first of a four-part mini-series which will reveal and celebrate the history of the body of water whose name now defines a unique and ever-evolving district of inner London.

With its numerous dock systems and miles of riverside wharves, London was then the largest port in the world, with ships sailing to and from all parts of the globe. But the Port of London goes all the way back to the Romans. In his talk, Peter Stone will take us through 2,000 years of London’s maritime history.

Peter Stone is a writer and video-maker under the name ‘The History of London’. You can find his writing on…
