About the event
Our November meeting is traditionally one of Remembrance, and this year our thoughts are with the Corps of Colonial Marines, a special unit of the Royal Marines. They fought during the War of 1812 between the British Empire & United States. These brave soldiers were African Americans, liberated from slavery, and fighting for their cause as well as the Empire.
Our speaker is Dr. Matthew Taylor, Historian & Author, whose book ‘Black Redcoats' describes their bravery and sacrifice. Matthew Taylor is a Civil Servant who has worked for the British House of Lords for many years. He is a history enthusiast with particular focus on little-known stories that confound common historical narratives; his time at the heart of British politics has taught him the value of history in allowing us to better know ourselves today, and work toward a greater future.
